Although known as Ming Polo, the tradition depicted in these striking scenes reaches much further back in Chinese history. Polo is believed to have originated in Central Asia and became particularly fashionable in China during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). The fast-paced equestrian sport was especially popular among members of the imperial court and aristocracy, and remarkably, historical evidence shows that both men and women played polo.
